2017 Estate Cabernet Franc
When we first decided to plant vines, we had our soil & climate analyzed to find the perfect grape variety for our vineyard. As it turned out, the unique combination of rocky soils & bay-influenced weather is ideal for the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. And while we could plant other varieties, why bother?
Although historically used as a blending grape to soften & add its signature spicy aroma to other grape varieties, we have kept Cabernet Franc as the sole grape in this wine. We have only a few rows of this variety in the upper corner of the vineyard that typically only produce just 2 barrels, which comes out to less than 50 cases.
Anything grilled with a good char matches the barrel spice of this wine & contrasts with the bright fruitiness well. Tri-tip or portobello fajitas are our favorite pairings.
WINEMAKER'S TASTING NOTES:
The 2017 Estate-Grown Cabernet Franc is a captivating expression of this varietal, showcasing the unique characteristics of the estate’s terroir in every sip. Upon first sniff, the wine offers a complex bouquet of aromas, with deep notes of molasses that introduce a rich, sweet depth.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet velvety, with an elegant balance of fruit and spice. The molasses note continues, lending a touch of richness, while baked strawberry and raspberry jam flavors come to the forefront, offering a luscious sweetness that perfectly complements the wine's structure. A gentle undercurrent of warm spice—a blend of cinnamon, clove, and a dash of pepper—adds complexity and warmth, weaving through the fruit flavors and enhancing the overall profile.
The finish is long and smooth, with the spice lingering on the palate, subtly balanced by the bright, lingering fruit. This small-batch Cabernet Franc is a beautiful reflection of the estate’s commitment to quality, offering a wine that is both approachable and sophisticated. It’s an ideal pairing with roasted meats, grilled vegetables, or aged cheeses, though it is also perfect for sipping on its own.
